PSUK NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OCT 10TH 2009
C LICK TO DOWNLOAD MEDAL TABLE
North Wales Police hosted this years championships which saw some 135 competitors throughout the various categories, first of all I must thank North Wales for a superb event in which we saw some very welcome new faces such as Gary Cole from Dyfed Powys Police and established British Police Internationals such as Jason More from Grampian Police performing some great judo with big ippon wins. It is always difficult to single out competitors for mention, but brother and sister Stuart and Kate Harris from West Midlands Police were outstanding in the approach and competent manner throughout the championship wining their respective titles with quality judo.
Andy Grand supported by a great team of officials ensured that the event ran very smoothly and finished in good time, my thanks to Andy and all those who officiated in particular Graham and Anne Bayley and our own Jill West.
Andy has now joined the PSUK technical commission in his role as the PSUK Tournament Director and will work with myself as Chairman, Director of Coaching and Examiners and National Coach, Matt Clempner National Coach, ,Andy Moss National Secretary and National Coach and Darren Dean National Coach, this commission has responsibility for all technical matters and is separate to the National Committee which has myself and Matt as the Judo representatives and Andy as National Secretary and committee member
Projected events were outlined at the dinner and details will be found in due course on the website so please keep looking at this.
We need to recruit new and particularly young members for the British Police Judo squad, we value all our members but for the future of police judo we need to keep the flow of young players coming so I would ask you all to search among your force and identify players of all ages who would enjoy our championship and the events we run any queries please contact me via the website.
We have are sending a British Police team to Paris to compete in a regional championship in November this will be led by Matt Clempner and we have our training and technical weekend on 4/5/6th December in Cardiff I have asked Andrew Moshinov to be our guest coach and Andy Moss will be circulating the details to you shortly, I look forward to seeing as many as possible of you there.
Chris Hunt
PSUK Director of Coaching and Examiners and National Coach.

coach has also offered an invitation to a select PSUK team to compete in an International event in Paris in November 2009.
Thanks for those who fought and the effort the put in the training, and for portraying such a professional example to our Spanish hosts and the other teams present.

PSUK JUDO TRAINING/TECNHICAL WEEKEND
13th-15th MARCH- WAKEFIELD
( More Photos in gallery)
We held our spring technical weekend at the West Yorkshire Police Training School Bishopgarth Wakefield . The event was as always, very well attended.
The delegates were treated to a coaching experience which will not be bettered anywhere in the UK. Our guest coaches of Andrew Moshinov 6th Dan - BJA Technical Director and Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki 8th Dan - former World Champion and one of the finest Ne-Waza specialists in the world.
Both gave coaching inputs which impressed all present and left food for thought for some time to come. The skill levels of both these coaches is amazing.
Mr Kashiwazaki had brought four students with him giving many British players their first opportunity to train with Japanese players and experience a different practise.
The Sunday morning session was taken by Chris Hunt and Darren Dean, this session tends to be the " grave yard shift' with many players too tired or injured to take part or preferring to home. I intend at our next weekend to discuss with all of you the benefits or not, of having this Sunday morning session, in the mean time I would appreciate any comments from you via this website. This is your weekend so please tell me what you would like.
Can I formally thank Lauren Slater and Lee Holley, together with Paul Johnson and his North Yorkshire colleagues for supplying, laying and transporting the mats, without this type of support PSUK would not be able to run these events.
Also my thanks to Andy Moss for once again arranging a very successful weekend.
Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you at Deeside for the National Championships.
Kind Regards
Chris

It with great pleasure that I am able to announce that Dr Andrew Moshinov Technical Director to the British Judo Association has agreed to accept the position of Honorary National Coach to PSUK Judo. Andrew is a truly internationally acknowledged coach he is hugely respected in his Russian homeland and his previous appointments include national coach to China and Taiwan.
Andrew accepted this position on Saturday 13th December 2008 following his technical presentation to PSUK members at Decembers Technical Course at Bramshill Police College.
Andrews joins a distinguished group of PSUK Honorary National Coaches, namely Alan Petherbridge MBE 9th Dan, Tony Sweeney 9th Dan, Neil Adams MBE 8th Dan, Richard Barraclough 8th Dan and Steve Pullen MBE 6th Dan.

Welsh Open Judo Championships 2008
The following PSUK squad members competed in the Welsh Open on Sunday 5th October 2008; this was a very hard event with an entry in excess of 180 players, meaning that several categories had around 20 competitors. All our players excelled winning several contests each by ippon by big throws, Stuart Harris and Lauren Slater lost for bronze medals and others could have also made it to the medal fights.
All our players showed that they can compete with the best Britain has to offer and showed a very high standard of contest judo, looking at the entries it was not possible to predict the eventual medallists.
Well done to you all.

PSUK Judo Technical Course Bramshill College
11th to 14th December 2008
We held our winter technical course at the excellent facilities of Bramshill Police College this is the second time we have used this venue which offered the highest standard of accommodation, food and sports hall. Over seventy judoka came together, 24 of who are coaches to enjoy a great weekend of judo. Our guest coach was Dr Andrew Moshinov 6th Dan the British Judo Association Technical Director who impressed everyone with his high skill level and in depth knowledge of judo technique, this together with his relaxed coaching style produced an extremely enjoyable and informative session.
Andrew has honoured PSUK Judo by agreeing to take up the position of Honorary National Coach to PSUK Judo (see separate report on PSUK website). We all look forward to working with and benefiting from Andrews appointment.
Additional technical sessions were given by Chris Hunt on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning accompanied by Andy Moss, Saturday also saw an informal team match between police players giving Chris and Andy the opportunity to see current form, this was a useful exercise. Many thanks to Graham Bailey for his refereeing support .
Players enjoyed periods of randori over the weekend and there was the opportunity to grade up to 5th Dan, the grading was not heavily supported, could I remind players that this is an excellent chance to obtain points for promotion against players of similar standard, particularly for our veteran and master players.
We are currently planning our calendar for 2009 dates need to be confirmed but to give you an idea:
· March 09 PSUK Weekend at Welsh Institute of Sport Cardiff
· May 09 Training visit to Alicante, Spain (Chris has received an invite to bring players over) for squad ones and twos, possibility of others attending on self financing basis.
· Training Camp possibly Bath Uni prior to National Team Championships
· National Teams participation
· 9th to 11th September 2008 National Championships North Wales, more details later in the New Year.
Many thanks to Andy Grand, Gary Liddle, Richard Stothard and Rob Dodson for their help in arranging this weekend, particularly for supplying and laying the mat.
Also a big thank you to Andy Moss for organising the weekend, never an easy task.
Can I wish all PSUK Judo members and our supporters a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year

Director of Coaching and Examiners.
November Training weekend and matches v Team Bath and Budokwai
Police Sport UK Judo held another successful weekend at NPIA Bramshill, Hampshire between the 16th and 18th November 2007.
Bramshill is a new venue for PSUK Judo, and the staff there made every effort to ensure that all delegates were most comfortable and afforded the highest levels of facilities. It is hoped that the venue can be used for future training weekends. There were 93 delegates in total with 54 of those being accommodated in the lovely refurbished en suite facilities.
Friday evening saw the traditional hour and a half of randori, mostly attended by the residential delegates; this was followed by a buffet and drinks in the Green Ride bar.
On Saturday PSUK were able to attract Andrew Moshinov British Judo Association Technical Director as the guest coach for the weekend. Andrew has the highest credentials as a coach and delivered a number of new and exciting inputs ranging from a variety of newaza escape techniques to combination attacks for more advanced players. The feedback on his training input was extremely positive and our thanks go to Andrew for taking the time to pass on his knowledge and experience.
Following Andrew's session was a very exciting three way team match between GB Police, Bath University and the Budokwai. These were three very different teams, the police fielding a slightly depleted team with only one member of the team that fought in Moscow recently. The university team was packed with young exciting talent which will represent the future of judo in the country and the Budokwai fielded a very experienced team packed with current and former international players.
Bath took on the Budokwai in the first match; winners shown in bold (some players having two fights)

The contests were fought in a great spirit and the police physio was kept busy as there were a couple of minor injuries. It was refreshing to see some high levels of skillful and technical judo in a team match. PSUK are grateful to both Team Bath and the Budokwai for continuing their close association with Police judo, it is hoped this will continue long into the future. Thanks to Norito Katabuchi and Yuko Nakano from Bath University and Tony Sweeney from the Budokwai.
As well as being a revalidation for BJA coaches, the weekend also provided an opportunity for players to take part in a promotion examination. With several Senior examiners present it possible to grade up to 5th Dan. Present on the mat were two 9th Dans Mr Tony Sweeney and Mr Alan Petherbridge MBE who are strong supporters of police judo, both Tony and Alan are Honorary Police National Coaches with a very impressive competition history having represented Great Britain in the 1964 Olympic Games where Alan had been the team captain, PSUK Judo were able to have three 6th Dans Chris Hunt, Ian Carter and Matthew Clempner, also on the mat, a credit to police judo that so many high grades were present.
PSUK also provide a sports masseuse, Jan Lawry who was kept busy for almost all of Saturday as delegates took advantage of her skills, it hoped Jan will attend future PSUK judo events. This will provide support for our physiotherapist Lloyd Nicholson.
The next PSUK judo weekend will be in either late march or early April 2008, a venue and date has not yet been agreed.

Congratulations to Jason Moore

British Police European Champion Awarded 5th Dan
Congratulations to Rachel Wilding on her recent promotion to 5th Dan!
You may be aware that Steve Pullen from the North West area is campaigning to become a member o the BJA board of directors. Many of you will be aware that Steve has long been a great supporter of police judo and has on many occasions attended PSUK judo weekends, along with members of his university team.
Steve has a very "say it, as you mean it" approach to speaking to people, a characteristic which I find most helpful and missing from many people who find themselves in influential positions. Steve would be an asset to the BJA on the board of directors.
Another supporter of PSUK Judo is Mike Callan, who is the director of coaching for Team Bath, with whom we have a very close association. Mike was kind enough to assist in our preparation for the USPE Judo Championships in 2007, when our squad were allowed unlimited access to facilities at Bath University. He also arranged top class coaching and randori for our players.
If you are in a position to influence voting for the vacancies on the board of directors on the BJA, can I ask you consider Steve and Mike as really excellent candidates and vote for them in the forthcoming ballot.
regards
Andy Moss
pdate following Directors of Examiners meeting
This was held at
One of the major changes is the make up of the commission , all Directors of Examiners are now members of the promotions commission, contained within this is a working group of Roy Inman Dave Horton Jones and Derek Hopkins who will carryout the day to day work and present proposals to the commission before being submitted to the Board of Directors, so please let me have any comments via the website email that you have on the current promotion structures and I will ensure that these are fed to the working group and members of the commission.
New Dan Grade certificates are being prepared and it is intended that a hard copy of the BJA Dan Grade register will be made available; I suspect that this will always be slightly out of date due to the regular promotions that take place. Any one who has not yet asked to have their Dan Grade entered on the PSUK website should send your details to us via the web site email, we need your name, current grade plus date of last promotion.
The technical grading system for juniors and Kyu grades has now started , there will be a review in November this year so please let me have your thoughts, experiences etc in order that I can help make the system as good as it can be for you the coaches to operate.
For those who feel that they would like some training in the technical systems courses are to be held throughout the UK, PSUK will be involved in this, the revalidation courses that we currently run will have to include two hours on the technical grading systems we will be including this in our autumn course ( date and venue to be decided) this will be presented by myself and Darren who as you know is a member of PSUK Technical, Commission and Director of Examiners for Wales, probably we will use the Sunday morning of the course to run these. Further more detailed courses can be arranged if there is sufficient interest. Again please let me know.
The High Grade review for promotions to 6th Dan and above are automatically reviewed by Dave Horton Jones and Roy Inman anyone of 5th Dan or above who is due to be eligible for promotion should complete a judo CV on their activity since last promotion and send it to Dave Horton Jones, his contact details re on the BJA website, please give me call with any queries you may have. ( 07795044439)
For those who are looking for a technical Dan Grade and wish to be examined please contact me and I will arrange your examination at our next weekend course, if you require some training on the Technical Dan Grade syllabus again let me know and I will arrange a course at a suitable venue for the applicants.
All gradings involving four or more clubs will be licensed in the future, fortunately there will be no fee, all competitive gradings will also be licensed.
New BJA records books are being printed and are at the proof reading stage as are stickers and Kyu grade certificates.
That is about it further updating on the website as I learn more.
High Quality Randori,
Please remember all PSUK players are guaranteed a warm welcome at the high quality practises at Bath University Mondays and Thursdays 8pm start (no mat fee) coaches Juergen Klinger 6th Dan Mike Callan 6th Dan and Patrick Roux 6th Dan or at the Welsh Institute of Sport Cardiff Coach Neil Adams 7th Dan (£2 mat fee half of which goes to a judo charity) starts at 7pm, I appreciate for many of you these are too far to travel in an evening but for those who live an hour to two hours away it is well worth the trip, let me know if you intend to attend as I am often there with players.
Next PSUK Judo Weekend
We will let you know the date and venue as soon as this has been firmed up,
National Championships 5th to 7th September 2008 Merseyside the entry forms etc have been circulated, if you have not had any these can be down loaded from our web site Please get you entries in early to assist the organisers; I look forward to seeing you there.
Chris
